Put simply, your birth chart is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. Astrologers from different traditions calculate and interpret this map using different techniques, but the core principle is the same: the map can be interpreted to reflect or illuminate aspects of your life experience.
Some people feel that the arrangement of planets and heavenly bodies at birth actually causes, in some way, one's experiences in life. It may be that there is a physical, causal relationship between the position and movement of heavenly bodies and individual human experience -- but I have not heard that principle articulated in a way that satisfies me, so I hold a different point of view. Currently, I see the relationship between celestial patterns and personal patterns as elegant, poetic correspondence. A metaphoric spark to fire up both observation and contemplation.
What if an outwardly observable pattern were an indication of an inner pattern or arrangement? What if I turned my attention toward this pattern and applied some of its principles to my thinking about my own situation and condition?
The what if is the operative, here. There is choice.
You can choose to use astrology as a lens, a way to look at your life. In my experience, this particular lens can show some pretty detailed and robust patterns, which can lead a person to greater clarity about the patterns in their own life. But is it the only lens? Is it inherently better or worse than any other? No. It is one way. And often as limited in scope as the astrologer who is interpreting your chart. So choose according to your own knowing.
Choose astrology out of curiosity and delight. Choose it out of hunger for a pattern, or need for a spark. Eschew doomsayers and fearmongers! In this world there are unethical opportunists who would have you feel powerless and afraid. There is no need for that. Celestial patterns teach the principle of wax and wane, turn and return. In life there are hard truths, to be sure, but there is always an opportunity for grace and compassion no matter what the circumstance.
It is with respect for my clients' dignity, with the hope to increase happiness and decrease suffering, and with the intention to benefit all beings that I offer my work as an astrologer.
